The Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has launched a program for local game studios to get proper valuation in the industry. 

Announced on Facebook via Level Up KL, the program allows game studios to submit a free application to be valued- helping studios trying to source funding give a more accurate projection to investors. 

"A reliable valuation is a crucial foundation for studios pursuing investment, publishing opportunities, and strategic partnerships", MDEC said in their announcement.

"For this initiative, MDEC has appointed RocketRide Games, a globally recognised consultancy specialising in game studio valuation and advisory services".

The valuation itself isn't free, however- selected applications will have to pay a valuation fee of RM5000, though MDEC is willing to subsidize up to 80% of the fee. 

Interested parties can apply via a Google Form, though it is only open to companies that have been open for at least 3 years that already own one IP.

Submissions need to be sent in by February 13th 2026. 

The Need For Proper Valuation In Malaysian Game Studios 

The MDEC Game Valuation program aims to help studios highlight their strengths, mainly assessing them through the following criteria: 

• Business performance
• Intellectual property (IP) portfolio
• Market positioning
• Game industry benchmarks

Done correctly, a good valuation can be the stepping stone to bigger moves in the industry- helping smaller developers see a broader plan than just getting their next game out the door. 

The Malaysian government in particular has had a good sense to focus on home-made IP, hosting events to celebrate properties across media like Upin and Ipin as well as No Straight Roads.
